Collision at a Distance, 2026
work-in-progress, single-channel video
The project takes vehicle crash testing conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), an independent testing organization with ties to the insurance industry, as its trigger point. These destructive tests repeatedly stage controlled impacts, transforming accidents into technical knowledge that can be observed, measured, and fed back into vehicle design. The work then re-simulates the collision across different industrial software and simulation systems. Through finite element analysis (FEM), the vehicle body is divided into thousands of calculable mesh elements, translating impact into conditions of material, contact, deformation, and failure. Moving between real footage, 3D scans, mesh models, and physics simulation, the work treats collision as an event continuously decomposed, calculated, and rehearsed across different scales.
